Noch 125 Tage, dann wird es wieder eine Fähre zwischen Cork, Irland, und Swansea (Wales) geben. Am 1. März 2010 wird die „Julia“ die seit 2006 ausgesetzte Fährverbindung wieder aufnehmen. Das 1982 gebaute Schiff gehört einer Kooperative in West Cork und wird deshalb auch „The People´s Ferry“ genannt. Weil Behörden und Big Business am Neustart der Fähre kein Interesse hatten, organisierte eine Handvoll Leute aus West Cork die Finanzierung des Projekts. Die Kooperative, die die Fähre unter der Marke „Fastnet Line“ betreiben wird, besteht aus mehreren hundert Anteilseignern. Sie hat die Julia in Skandinavien für 7.5 Millionen Euro gekauft und bereitet nun den Start am 1. März vor.
Hoffen wir, dass dieser volkseigene Genossenschaftsbetrieb auf die Beine kommt, wirtschaftlich arbeitet und seine Ziele erreicht: Die Fähre soll Touristen und Warenströme vom Kontinent und aus Großbritannien in den Süden und Südwesten Irlands bringen und damit die regionale Wirtschaft stärken. Zur Absicherung der Fastnet Line muss die Coop allerdings weitere 2,5 Millionen Euro sammeln, und vor allem: Das Reservierungs- und Buchungsmanagement-System muss so schnell wie möglich online gehen. Denn noch immer gibt es auf der Website www.fastnetline.com keine Möglichkeit, einen Trip zu buchen.
